In this COVID situation, many rules have been imposed by the government. “Some rules are nothing but old habits that people are afraid to change”- Therese Anne Fowler. You know there are rules even for writing poetry! Sit back and make yourself comfortable because now its time for you to know what they are.
There are 5 types of poetic elements/ literary devices which gave me the interest to write poetry. They are:
alliteration: The repetition of usually initial consonant sounds in two or more words or syllables is known as alliteration. Example - A good cook could cook as many cookies as a good cook who could cook cookies.
imagery: Imagery means to use of objects, actions, and ideas in such a way that it uses our 5 senses. Example - It was dark and dim in the forest. The words “dark” and “dim” are visual images
rhyme: Rhymes are similarity of sound between words or the endings of words. especially when these are used at the end of poetry. Example- cleaver and silver, patter and pitter.
simile: Comparison of one thing with another thing of a different kind, used to make a description. Example - as brave as a lion.
repetition: Repetition is the act of repeating something that has already been said or written. Example - time after time, heart to heart, boys will be boys, hand in hand.
I hope you understood the five literary devices. (I haven't mentioned the other three literary devices). The ones mentioned above are the ones which gave me a feeling to express my experiences and my thoughts to the world. I say that these 5 literary devices will come in every poem, but if you don’t agree with me, please do let me know in the comments down below.
