TV - Knowledge Trove or Idiot Box?

Hi Friends, Last year, when for the first time I heard that in the 80s and 90s the TV’s were called as “Idiot Box”, I was very angry. I understood, from my father, that in the olden days, the channels in the TV mostly aired movies, music and melodrama. Just like the saying, like a garland in a monkey’s hand, I think the usefulness of a thing depends upon the way the person uses it.

Though there are many people who use TV just for entertainment, I believe, the TV serves more than that. Today, thankfully, there are channels dedicated for sports (Star Sports, DD Sports), education (Gyan Darshan), knowledge (Discovery, NatGeo), news (Mirror Now, NDTV) and infotainment (Nick Jr, Disney Jr, Cartoon Network, etc) which help us in getting useful knowledge.

Well, in my pre-primary days, I used to watch ‘Barney and his friends’. It taught me important values like sharing is caring, loving family members, cleaning-up after playing, etc through songs. Then in my 1st grade I started to watch Mickey Mouse Clubhouse from where I learnt concepts relating to maths and science, travel and adventure, climate and weather, and many more.

As I grew up, I started watching TV series like Paw Patrol and Miraculous Ladybug through which I learnt more about using devices to help people in trouble. I love when Ladybug and Catnoir save Paris! And my favourite dialogue is “Pound it”. These TV series helps me in thinking big and contributing big as well as to be brave and fight the evil forces.

Recently I completed watching all the 3 seasons of Just Add Magic and 1 entire season of Kicks. I am inspired by the teen girls in those series who are quite curious and eager to unravel mysteries and set a good example to others. In my house, my dad has the concept of ‘weekend TV nights’ where every Friday and Saturday, from 9pm to 11pm, I get to watch such interesting shows.

In conclusion, I believe that the TV is truly a boon for all.
