What Does Freedom Mean? (published intraschool)

Updated: Nov 4, 2020

Freedom…. Freedom… Freedom! Around the 2nd week of August 2020, the word freedom had become the buzz word. Though it was not the first time I was hearing the same, this year I had mixed feelings. The freedom to go outside to play, the freedom to go to a preferred restaurant, the freedom to plan for weekend trips and many other things suddenly have vanished.

More importantly, I also miss the freedom to share lunchbox with classmates, the freedom to play little games during the recess times, and the freedom to laugh heartily. Boy, thanks to COVID – 19, I miss freedom the most. So, when there was excitement around regarding Freedom, this year, quite frankly, I was quite disinterested about the same.

On the morning of August 15, 2020, I tuned into the live event of Independence Day Celebrations at our school. Our Principal Ma’am, in her speech said, “freedom is more than acting freely; freedom is thinking responsibly and not hurting anyone through our actions or words”. And that made lots of sense to me.

I realized that the controls due to COVID-19 are not to remove our freedom but to help us stay safe and healthier. When I related the phrase, “if health is lost, something is lost…” and the restrictions due to COVID-19, I understood that it was for our goodness.

I now know for sure to enjoy freedom, we need to remain healthy first!
