Can you guess who would I be reborn as a celebrity? I will tell you. It is Florence Nightingale. I believe, modern nursing wouldn’t have been the same without her. I will list out reasons why I want to become a person like her:
Florence Nightingale was sent to Crimea in November 1854 and where she realized that most of the soldiers died because hygiene was being neglected leading to fatal mass infections. Nightingale soon implemented handwashing and other hygiene practices in that war hospital and brought death rates down to 2% from 42%. (I believe, that’s why we learnt about hygiene in SOCH).
Fondly known as the Lady with the Lamp, she used to spend the nights in attending the wounded soldiers and providing them with mental support. She is supposed to have spent the nights listening to the woes of the soldiers and speak to them positively about the treatment and recovery. Her care and compassion are believed in helping the soldiers recover faster.
Recognizing her efforts, she was awarded the Royal Red Cross Award in 1883, Lady of Grace of the Order of St John in 1904 and the Order of Merit in 1907. International Nurses Day is celebrated on her birthday. Her contributions were so large that she was offered to be buried at Westminster Abbey where famous people are buried! I read it in one of the books (Great Scientists of the World that Sir Isaac Newton and Charles Darwin are buried in Westminster Abbey.
Florence Nightingale’s humane and empathetic approach makes her my favourite celebrity. I want to be a technologist and use technology for improving the lives of human beings. I also want to use technology for archaeology to discover ancient civilizations. Whatever career or activity I may do, like Florence Nightingale, I want to always be kind, caring and compassionate towards fellow human beings and all living things!
