CYCLONE! Take cover

One of the natural disasters is cyclones. They are many times dangerous – causing damage to life and property. Spinning storms or called by many names – over Pacific Basin it is called a typhoon; over Atlantic Basin it is called hurricane; and over Indian ocean it is called cyclone.

All spinning storms become dangerous when they exceed 90 KMPH. All citizen towns face extensive damage because of such cyclones. The spinning storms bring heavy rains leading to flooding in non – coastal areas. The coastal areas get affected by the wind speed (Uprooting big trees and destroying thatched houses) and by storm surge (powerful winds pushing ocean water onto land).

Land fall is another term associated with spinning storms. Land fall happens when the spinning storms moving from the ocean into the land. The recent cyclone over Arabian sea named Tauktae (pronounced ‘Tau – Tay’) wrecked the coastal areas of Kerala, Karnataka, Goa, Gujarat and Maharashtra.

Thanks to technology(like satellite imaging), weather forecasters are able to track the formation and movement of spinning storms. This helps in fore-warning the people along the coast and relocate them well in advance. There by many lives (people and livestock) are saved even before the land fall happens. Hey! If you hear that there is a cyclone do make sure to take cover.
