"Stand Still", Oh! that wasn't the words of our PE teacher in a PE class.
I was reading an article on Summer Solstice and I understood that the word solstice comes from Latin wherein 'sol' stands for the sun and ‘sistere’ means stand still. What made me research about the same? Well, on 21st June 2021, the earth observed its Annular Summer Solstice. Here's a gist of what I learnt:
a) On the day of Summer Solstice the sun is directly over the Tropic of Cancer at noon. The vertical noon rays are directly overhead the Tropic of Cancer forming the shortest shadow.
b) There is a second solstice which occurs in December and it is called the Winter Solstice.
c) During Summer Solstice, the Earth’s axis is tilted and the North Pole is tipped towards the sun.
d) On this particular day, the North Pole is supposed to get 30% more energy from the sun than the Equator.
e) In many cultures the day is celebrated as a religious festival. China, England, Denmark, Sweden, Finland and Norway mark this day with festivities.
Well, it was interesting to know more about summer solstice. Trust, you also enjoyed reading the same.
